In a recent blog post titled, Three Primary Components of a Deliberate Living System[1], we read that these components are the Seven Dimensions of Wellness, Permaculture, Entrepreneurship.  Today, we’re discussing Social Wellness and Social Media.

Social Wellness

Social Wellness is the ability to relate to and connect with other people in our world. Our ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with family, friends and co-workers contributes to our Social Wellness.[2]

We relate to and connect with other people in our world a number of different ways.  Over the past century, these ways have changed dramatically.  Over the past few decades, the change has been even greater.

Currently we are experiencing one of the most monumental shifts regarding our own humanity.  This shift is perhaps most noticeable with regard to technology and human connectivity.  Connectivity with humans has become integrated with social media.

Personal Social Media Usage

I am a user of the following social media platforms:  Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.  The only accounts that are personalized to/for myself are Twitter and LinkedIn.  The way in which I use Facebook and Instagram is via business and/or organization pages, where I create and/or moderate the contact that is shown on those various pages.

Social Media Usage Experimentation

For years, I maintained a personal Facebook account.  I also struggled with my inability to effectively manage the way I used it.  I allowed it to be a tremendous time suck.  Accordingly, on two separate occasions I have “left” Facebook (aka “Hotel California”).

Facebook makes this very easy to do.  We have the ability to check out any time we like, but unless we actually delete our account, we can’t ever leave.  Disabling your account just puts everything “on hold.”  The first time I “left” was in mid-2012.

At that time, there were various reasons for doing so (if you’re curious, just comment below or shoot me a message here), and after approximately 8 months I re-enabled it.  The act of leaving Facebook was a great social experiment.  Try it.

Currently, I am in the process of another personal Facebook hiatus.  I left Facebook approximately 6 months ago and have enjoyed my time away from it.  Again, I’m still using business and organization pages, but very deliberately.

Over the past few months, I’ve received feedback on my decisions – both positive and negative.  Social media, and it’s integration in the lives we lead and the shift in the societal norm is really quite fascinating.  It’s easier to review this while slightly removed.

In addition to feedback regarding my presence (or lack thereof) on social media – there’s also been a lot of discussion about it with friends, acquaintances, and business partners.  Again, fascinating conversation on many levels for various reasons.

Probably because I've got a lot going and I'd rather have 500 perennials for five families than the 100 or so we have now.     • Today we are creating a two hour long video about how to build a Rocket Oven.  This design is for indoor use although we show versions that have been modified to be weather resistant.  A Rocket Oven will do all of your baking without the environmental disaster associated with natural gas or electric ovens.  For those of you living or considering off grid, this uses fuel that is plentiful and readily found - as opposed to off-grid's dirty little grid secret: "propane".  As an added bonus, the environmental impact is far smaller than any other type of oven.

      Rocket Ovens use the same "engine" as a rocket mass heater.  An  insulated j-tube that pushes the burn temp so high that the smoke and creosote from a fire is also used as fuel.  The exhaust is very clean and the heat is hyper focused on the task at hand.  The designs in this video are "white oven" designs - the exhaust does not mingle with the food.

    • That's my great grandfather's barn. Must be over 50yrs old and straight as when it was first built. He helped enough others and built enough community to get this feat done. His kids and even great-grandchildren see this barn and know anything is possible. If he could build this with horses. There are no excuses for any of us.

      1. Don't forget nothing.
      2. Have your musket clean as a whistle, hatchet scoured, sixty rounds powder and ball, and be ready to march at a minute's warning.
      3. When you're on the march, act the way you would if you was sneaking up on a deer. See the enemy first.
      4. Tell the truth about what you see and what you do. There is an army depending on us for correct information. You can lie all you please when you tell other folks about the Rangers, but don't never lie to a Ranger or officer.
      5. Don't never take a chance you don't have to.
      6. When we're on the march we march single file, far enough apart so one shot can't go through two men.

      13. Every night you'll be told where to meet if surrounded by a superior force.

      16. Don't cross a river by a regular ford.

      Ducks for Fun, Profit and Land Development
      Move over chickens it is time for a new bird to take the lead. Well, perhaps not the lead but definitely a better seat at the table. Three years ago well-known speaker and Podcaster Jack Spirko, along with his wife Dorothy decided to step into farming for profit, and Nine Mile Farm was born. Initially focusing on chickens for farm fresh pastured eggs and meat they also kept a small flock of ducks just for fun. They soon stumbled into a new and growing niche, pastured local duck eggs.
      It took a bit of effort to get their customers to try duck eggs but once they did the next decision was simple, out with the chickens and ramp up the ducks. Rather than fight with over a hundred local producers to sell chicken eggs for 5-6 dollars a dozen the couple now stays constantly sold out selling duck eggs at 8 dollars a dozen. With about 50% of their sales going to high end restaurants and farm to table markets (Ida Clair, Cadillac Ranch, Ellerbe Fine Foods, Farm to Fork Foods) and their other 50% going to direct to consumer sales.
      In his talk Jack will cover how to build up a flock fast and build a customer base just as quickly. He will also discuss importance of looking like a professional farm in web presence, social media and even a dedicated phone number in gaining customers. Jack will be discussing the top breeds for profit, why he doesn’t even think about “meat ducks” and how to use a single specialized product such as this to build a multiple product offering, while only needing to build a customer base once.
      Additionally in this talk you will learn some of the amazing reasons farming ducks for eggs makes more sense for many small land owners then chickens. These include, less competition, higher profits, breeds that outlay chickens, a herdable and trainable flock, greater suitability for brittle land and more.
